Casemates Lentisc
Pistacia lentiscus
Lentisc Grand Casemates Square
A dense, aromatic lentisc softening the edge of Gibraltar's busiest square.
Story & Significance
Lentisc, or mastic, releases a warm resinous scent when its leaves are crushed — the smell of the Mediterranean scrub. Though modest in size, it is a keystone of the maquis, feeding blackcaps and Sardinian warblers on its small red-to-black berries through autumn.
