The Alameda Olive
Olea europaea
Olive Alameda Botanic Gardens
A broad, silver-leaved olive standing near the heart of the Alameda, its trunk gnarled by more than a century of Levanter winds.
Story & Significance
Olives have shaded Gibraltar since antiquity, and this one anchors the botanic gardens founded in 1816. Generations of Gibraltarians have passed beneath its canopy on the walk up from Main Street. Its fruit is small and bitter — never harvested — but its shade is generous, and in high summer it is one of the coolest spots in the gardens.
