Trafalgar Carob
Ceratonia siliqua
Carob Trafalgar Cemetery
An old carob leaning over the quiet graves of the Trafalgar Cemetery, its dark evergreen leaves casting deep shade.
Story & Significance
The carob — algarrobo — is woven into Mediterranean life: its seeds, remarkably uniform in weight, gave us the "carat". This tree keeps watch over sailors laid to rest after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Its long leathery pods ripen to a deep brown each autumn and were once ground for animal feed across the Campo.
